4-Layer Merino wool mittens

Knitted merino wool mittens for cold days and time spent outdoors. The 4-layer mittens consist of an outer layer of merino wool and three inner linings, creating four layers in total. Each layer has its purpose, and together they create a warm mitten. Merino wool is a soft and supple natural fibre with the ability to provide warmth while remaining breathable.

At Öjbro Vantfabrik, natural materials, function and storytelling design come together in mittens created to be used and appreciated for many years. The patterns carry inspiration from folklore, cultural history and traditional knitting traditions. Each pattern has its own story to tell.

We design our mittens with a focus on function, materials and longevity. They are created for everyday walks, quiet moments in nature and cold days when hands need a little extra warmth.

With four layers comes a warm mitten. Air is trapped both within the wool and between the layers, helping to retain warmth and creating a wind-resistant mitten. It is the same simple principle that allows a thermos to keep its contents warm for longer. For this reason, our warmest mittens are marked with the symbol "Varning varma vantar".

Frequently asked questions & answers

Why are your 4-layer mittens so warm?

Our 4-layer mittens are constructed with several layers that help trap air both within the materials and between the layers. It is this still air that contributes to the mitten’s insulating properties and helps retain warmth during cold days.

Are mittens warmer than gloves?

Yes. In a mitten, the fingers share warmth with one another, helping to retain heat more effectively. Gloves offer greater freedom of movement but are generally not perceived as being as warm during cold winter days.

Are the mittens windproof?

No, our mittens are not windproof, but they are wind-resistant. The combination of the four layers helps to reduce the effect of the wind while maintaining breathability.

How do I choose the right size?

Wool adapts to the hand with use, so it is usually better to choose a mitten that feels slightly roomy rather than too tight. We offer three sizes: Small, Medium and Large.

Do the mittens work for Raynaud’s syndrome or cold-sensitive fingers?

This varies from person to person, but many customers with Raynaud’s syndrome appreciate our warmest 4-layer mittens. As symptoms differ between individuals, we cannot guarantee a specific effect, but we know they work well for many people who often experience cold hands.

Are there mittens made entirely of merino wool?

Yes. Our Double Merino Wool Mittens are knitted from 100% merino wool, both in the outer layer and the lining. They are designed for those who appreciate natural materials and wish to avoid synthetic fibres as much as possible.

How durable are merino wool mittens?

Merino wool is a natural material valued for its softness and warmth, but wool is more sensitive to abrasion than materials such as leather. If your mittens will be exposed to frequent wear from stroller handles, dog leads, walking poles or bicycle handlebars, we recommend our suede-reinforced mittens.

Do the patterns have a meaning?

Yes. Each pattern carries its own story. The inspiration comes from folklore, cultural history and traditional knitting traditions. These stories are an important part of our work to carry Scandinavian pattern traditions forward to new generations.
