Why are the 4-layer Merino wool mittens labelled “Varning varma vantar” so warm?
Our mittens are built with four layers that trap air both within the material and between the layers. In other words, it is a 100% merino wool mitten with a three-component lining system. It is the air that insulates and retains warmth, much like a thermos flask.
How do I choose the right size?
When in doubt, choose a larger size rather than a smaller one. Wool naturally adapts to your hands and felts over time.
Most women wear Medium, some wear Small, and a few wear Large.
Most men wear Large, some wear Medium, and a few wear Small.
Do the mittens change with use?
Yes. Merino wool gradually shapes itself to your hands. Over time, the wool felt slightly, making the mitten denser, warmer, and more personal in fit.
Are the 4-layer mittens suitable for people with white fingers and/or Raynaud’s syndrome?
Many users experience a significant difference. White fingers can be a symptom of Raynaud’s syndrome, which may require medical treatment. Our “Varning varma vantar” are among the warmest knitted mittens available for those who suffer from cold hands.
How durable are the wool mittens?
They are made from 100% Merino wool.
Wool is sensitive to abrasion. If your mittens will be exposed to friction from stroller handles, walking poles, dog leads, cycling, or similar activities, we recommend our suede-reinforced mittens or overmittens.
Is the thumb too long?
No. The thumb is intentionally designed slightly longer because wool adapts to your hand over time. The extra length allows for this shaping and reduces pressure where the thumb meets the mitten.
How long have you been making these mittens?
We began machine knitting in 1996 in Ulricehamn, Sweden. Since then, we have continued to develop Åse Öjbro’s patterns step by step.
Do the patterns have a meaning?
Yes. Every pattern tells its own story. It is part of our craftsmanship and makes each pair of mittens more than just something that keeps you warm.
Do you make mittens entirely from Merino wool?
Yes. Our 2x Merino Wool Mittens are made entirely from wool and lined with Merino wool for those who prefer only natural materials. They are not quite as warm as our 4-layer “Varning varma vantar”, as they do not block wind as effectively.
Does wool keep you warm when damp?
Yes. Wool can absorb a large amount of moisture before feeling damp and continues to provide warmth even when moist.
Do you make Merino wool wrist warmers?
Yes. They are knitted from 100% Merino wool and feature a partial thumb opening. They work best as wrist warmers, while the thumb support is there when you need it.
They are available in Medium size, although fit may vary depending on pattern and construction.
Can the mittens be washed?
Yes, but airing them is usually sufficient. If washing is necessary, use a wool program without spinning and gently reshape them while damp. Our suede-reinforced mittens and gloves should not be machine washed.
